When should career planning start? A Class 7 to 10 roadmap for families
"Class 7? That is far too early for a career decision." We hear this often, and it is half right. Class 7 is too early to decide anything. It is exactly the right time to start noticing what your child enjoys.
Why start early, and why not rush
Careers in India are tied to specific exams and subject rules that begin from Class 11. Waiting until results day means making a two-year, sometimes ten-year, decision in a few days. Starting early spreads that decision over four years of small discoveries.
Notice, do not decide. A child who tries robotics, drama, coding, cooking or volunteering learns what they enjoy and what they do not, and both are useful.
The four-year roadmap

Six types of young explorers
We use six interest types, based on the widely studied Holland (RIASEC) model. Most children have a mix of two or three. Here is what to try for each.

Signs your child is ready for an assessment
- They can name at least three things they enjoy outside school.
- They are curious about what people do for a living.
- They are entering Class 8, 9 or 10 and are open to talking about the future.
- They are stressed about the stream question and want clarity.
If your child is not ready, wait. A forced test gives poor answers. You can instead start with activities and conversations.
Skills to build by Class 10
- Reading and writing: daily reading and short weekly writing.
- Number sense: comfort with Class 10 Maths, whatever stream follows.
- Curiosity habit: ask "why" and look up answers.
- Communication: presenting an idea in two minutes.
- Time management: a simple weekly planner.

Frequently asked questions
Is Class 7 too early for career guidance?
It is too early for decisions but not for exploration. Trying different activities and noticing what feels natural makes the Class 10 choice easier.
Will early planning put pressure on my child?
It should not. The aim is curiosity, not labels. Keep it playful, avoid comparing with others and never say "you must become..."
When should we take a career assessment?
Class 8 or 9 is a good time for a first interest and aptitude assessment, and Class 9 or 10 for a stream-focused one. Repeat it after a year, because interests grow.
What if my child changes their mind often?
That is normal and healthy at this age. Note what stays consistent across months, because that is usually the real interest.
How can parents help without pushing?
